There was dismay after a look-out point with one of the most stunning views in the strath was scrawled with graffiti.

James Stevens, who lives in Grantown, had walked to the top of Farleitter Crag with his mother Gill on Monday.

He said he was saddened to see that the big boulder had names inked onto it and did an impromptu tidy-up using what he had to hand.

Mr Stevens said: “I was at the main lookout over Uath Lochans on Monday. I had been a couple weeks ago and it wasn't there.

“I went with my mum who is visiting and was saddened to see the graffiti.

“I had my sandwich in a tinfoil wrapping so use the tinfoil and water to try and erase it and some moss to give it a final scrub and clean.

“It's not a perfect job but it's no longer noticeable.”

A spokesperson for landowners Forestry Land & Scotland said: “It is disappointing to see vandalism anywhere, whether its graffiti, trails churned up by off-road motor bikes or trees that have had branches lopped off by people trying to start a camp fire.

“We appreciate Mr Stevens’ efforts and his community spirit.”

Uath Lochans is one of the prettiest woodlands in the area, with an easy trail around the lochans or a longer route up to a superb view over Strathspey via the Farleitter Trail.

The name is pronounced ‘wah lochans’ – it means the hawthorn small lochs.
