Highland Council is responsible for the local road network in and around Grantown and the rest of the strath.

Highland Council roads in the strath will benefit from an additional £186,557 of investment from the local authority.

The funding has been welcomed by members of the Badenoch and Strathspey area committee at their meeting today.

The area’s capital budget of £765,310 for 2021/22 will now been supplemented over the next two years by the extra funds.

Council road chiefs have said the money will be used for surface dressing, resurfacing, strip widening, passing places and other works.

Local Highland councillors meeting virtually were asked to note the latest report and the progress being made by roads operatives against the 2021/22 area roads programme.

Committee chairman Bill Lobban said: “Our staff deserve a great deal of credit for delivering such an extensive programme especially in some of the areas of greatest concern.

"It is pleasing to note that patching and resurfacing was completed on the A938 and the A939 this summer at sections including Tullochgribban, Duthil and Dava. Planned works include additional works on the A938 and A939.”

He added: “Contractor availability has been a significant factor this year primarily due to the increase in volume of work resulting from the welcome larger council roads budget – combined with that of neighbouring local authorities and the trunk road authority – and the effect of the Covid pandemic.

“Thankfully due to some excellent planning by officers and engagement with contractors early, we have achieved significant capital works over the summer 2021 season.”

The £186,557 is the strath's share of funding of £6.5m Highland-wide which in turn is part of £9m over two financial years, 2021/22 and 2022/23 from the council’s health and prosperity strategy.

The main strategic roads in the strath which are the council's responsibility are the A938 and the A939.

The A9, A95 and other trunk roads are the remit of Transport Scotland and its contractors.

Some examples of the progress made this year on the council's local roads programme of repair include:

* B970 Culreach (Balliefurth) saw 1200m of surface dressing;

* The B9102 Lettoch – Craigvaren – Advie Junction – Tulchan received 5,100m of surface dressing;

* The A938 Achnahannet junction area (Balnaan Junction to Tullochgribban Plantation) saw 1,880m of surface dressing; and

* A939 Dava Phase 1 was completed with £63,000 spent on patching work.
