"Good news" poll presents new challenge for SNP Westminster candidate

Drew Hendry: SNP will have to fight harder

The Ashcroft poll predicting an SNP win in the strath at the next general election presents a new challenge, says the local SNP candidate.

Drew Hendry, standing for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, responded to the latest polls from Lord Ashcroft on Wednesday (February 4).

“It is always welcome to have positive momentum in a campaign and we certainly have that,” he said.

But he went on: “What these polls tell me though is that the LibDems and the UK Government are most likely to throw even greater resources at us in order to win this seat.

“It would be an enormous blow to the LibDems for the SNP to defeat the incumbent, so we are under no illusions that this poll has probably just made the challenge bigger than it already was.

“The last thing anyone will see from the SNP campaign is complacency and we are concentrating only on earning the votes of everyone in the constituency.”

A spokesman for Danny Alexander said the choice is clear in the Highlands.

He commented: "The election is between a Nationalist candidate who wants to use the Highlands as a ‘step on the road’ to independence, or Danny, who for 10 years has delivered for Highlanders and is now accused of doing ‘too much’ for constituents on a whole range of issues, like a rural fuel discount for Highland communities.

“With the SNP determined to re-run the referendum they have taken their eye off the ball, with Highland issues always coming second to their separation obsession."We are confident that Highlanders will continue to back Danny when presented with that choice.”
