Golden eagle "needs your vote!"
The golden eagle needs Scotland’s help in the search for the nation’s favourite bird.
It’s almost synonymous with Scotland and has been made the country its home for thousands of years – but hasn’t even made it in to the top 10 in the search for Britain’s national bird.
David Lindo, also known as The Urban Birder, is a TV presenter, broadcaster, writer and naturalist, and earlier this year launched the search for the nation’s favourite bird.
But, with the round one closing date looming at the end of the month it looks like the golden eagle may not make it to the final six – and therefore has no chance to win the vote when the second, and final, round of voting starts in Spring 2015.
“The golden eagle can only be found in Scotland – it’s the bird most associated with Scotland, so it would be such a shame if this wonderful bird didn’t make it to the final six and lost out on the chance of being named Britain’s national bird.” says David.
The final vote will run alongside the build-up to the general election in May – “an alternative election!”
Voters will be able to choose from a shortlist of six birds. The final winner will be announced in May.
Currently the top 10 are:
Robin, barn owl, kingfisher, blue tit, wren, blackbird, puffin, mute swan, red kite and kestrel.
The golden eagle is currently at number 21.
