Carrbridge man set to travel alone to South Pole

Benjamin Weber, the Strathspey man set on a polar mission to raise funds for the fight against cancer, is in Chile preparing to set off on his one-man expedition to the southernmost point of the planet.

Ben on one of his many preparation expeditions – he has trekked across Greenland, through Canadian wastes and around the frozen north of Scandinavia to ready himself for his massive challenge.

"Am in Punta Arenas now," he tells the Strathy.

"Have been organising all my ration packs for the next 50 or so days.

"All sorted now and just the last bits and pieces that shouldn’t take long. Waiting for flight to Antarctica..."

The plane is set to take off today.

"But there’s a chance that I might be delayed due to the conditions over there – the runways need to be cleared of about a metre and a half of hardened, compact snow that accumulated over the winter, and it is taking time!"

He explained: "A couple of expeditions that were due to go out a few days ago have been delayed but still chance my journey will go on time."

Mr Weber was moved to plan his mega trip after his mother Marian died through an undiagnosed cancer.

Watch this space for the 'off'.
