Free drink water tap will quench thirsts in Aviemore
Scottish Water has submitted plans to Highland Council’s planning service to provide a free drinking water tap in the centre of Aviemore.
The utility giant is installing modern outdoor drinking water taps across the country as part of its Top up Tap project.
The initial pilot phase of putting in 10 taps was completed in 2018/19 and since then a facility has been installed in every local authority area.
It has now submitted plans for the public tap, which will be located by Smiffy’s fish and chip shop, with council planners in Kingussie.
The roll-out of taps is aimed at encouraging people to be more environmentally-friendly and refill their water bottles.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We’ve had a lot of interest from communities all over Scotland and have secured funding to bring the total number of taps to 70 by next year.”
Aviemore Community Council contacted the water company to ask if a tap could be installed in the village.
It is all part of a campaign called Your Water Your Life, encouraging people to carry a refillable bottle and top up on the go.
The taps currently in place have so far dispensed more than 82,000 litres of water – equivalent to around 250,000 single-use plastic bottles.
