Former record-breaking Highland councillor due in court
A former Highland councillor, who was the youngest ever elected in the region, is due to appear in court later this week.
Alex MacLeod, who won his Caithness seat at the age of 19 in May 2012, has been the subject of an investigation into his campaign expenses for more than a year.
Mr MacLeod is scheduled to attend Inverness Sheriff Court on Thursday.
The 21-year-old, who is originally from Delny, near Tain, was elected as an SNP councillor in May last year and had previously worked as an aide for First Minister Alex Salmond.
Police confirmed in August last year that officers were investigating allegations of inappropriate election conduct into a councillor after it received an anonymous complaint.
In December 2012, Northern Constabulary reported the young councillor to the procurator fiscal over alleged discrepancies in his campaign expenditure under the Representation of the People Act 1983.
He then quit the SNP, but continued to serve his constituents as an Independent Nationalist.
He announced last month he would step down from his elected role on 30th September after the court date emerged.
The council is to organise a by-election to fill the vacant Landward Caithness seat.
