First snow accumulations of winter arrive in Cairngorms

The first significant covering of the high tops of the Cairngorms has arrived overnight.

The heavy rains and lashing winds in the strath also brought snow to the range.

The high tops of Cairn Gorm, Coire an t-Sneachda and Coire an Lochan and even the headwall of Coire Cas had a good white covering this morning.

Aviemore resident Tom Devereux was out walking his dog in Dalfaber Woods which looks out onto the Cairngorms.

Mr Devereux, who is also a guide for Aviemore-based Wilderness Scotland, said: "This is certainly the most snow by far I have seen this season and hopefully it bodes well for a great winter outdoors season at Cairngorm and for businesses in the strath."

Contractors from Balfour Beatty who have won the contract to repair the £20m Cairngorm funicular are due to move on site before the end of this month to start work.

Resort owners Highlands and Islands Enterprise hope that the funicular - which has been out of action since September 2018 - will be running in time for the ski season of 2021/22.

Meanwhile weather experts predict tough snow season for many of mainland Europe's most popular ski resorts after a promising start. Click here to read this story.
