Snow is expected over the Highlands, on hills down to as low as 400 metres, from later today.

Met office spokeswoman laura Young said that so far only a small amount of snow had fallen in the Cairngorms.

However, the remants of Hurricane Gonzalo is expected to bring more high winds to the region as well as snow on higher ground.

Climate predictions up to the end of December give a 35 per cent chance of the Highlands being warmer than average.

The experts say there is only a 10 per cent chance that the area will be hit by colder than average temperatures.

However, there is a 30 per cent chance that it will be wetter than average over the same period.
