A major fire appeared to have broken out in the woods at the far end of Loch Morlich.

The blaze could be seen on the live stream from the webcam run by Loch Morlich Watersports Centre overlooking the beauty spot.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters from Aviemore had attended the scene and extinguished two camp fires at the edge of the beach.

She said that there were no reports of damage to the surrounding woodlands.

She was unable to say if the camp fires were being attended to before the firefighters arrived at the scene.

Reports of the blaze surfaced on local social media round 45 minutes ago.

A ban on camp fires was put in place earlier this week by the landowners Forestry and Land Scotland following problems last weekend.

Emergency services were called out on several occasions last Saturday and Sunday to extinguish blazes lit by campers.

Last night there were scores of cars parked in the woods at the beauty spot despite signs from FLS warning that no overnight parking was allowed. Signs also highlighted that people should only camp for one night by the loch.

There has been a rise in 'wild camping' in the strath and wider Scotland since lockdown restrictions were eased. This prompted Scottish Government Ministers and other public authorities to urge the public to respect the countryside.
