Fire officers have double checked a home in Newtonmore which was damaged when a camper van went on fire beside it this evening.

Crews from Kingussie and Aviemore were called to Station Road at 5.15pm after the alarm was raised.

Tourists walking the village’s celebrated Wildcat Trail told the Strathy: “We got to the golf course side by the river and saw a plume of black smoke.

“At first we thought it was a building on fire, but once the firefighters arrived they seemed to have things under control very quickly so perhaps it was rubbish being burned that got out of control or something.”

A spokesperson confirmed that a campervan parked beside the house had gone on fire.

“Two hose reels were engaged and the gable end of the house was slightly damaged as well as the campervan.

“There were no injuries and no ambulance was required.

“The officers were recalled at 7.45 and this evening another check was carried out, with Kingussie completing one last check at 9.30 and calling the all clear.”
