A retained firefighter plans to give up his firearms after breaching regulations regarding the safe keeping of guns and ammunition.

Craig Helliwell (41), previously of Spey Avenue, Grantown on Spey and Dornoch Road, Inverness admitted failing to secure the keys to his gun cabinet.

Inverness Sheriff Court.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that police visited his then new address in Inverness on September 21, 2020 and discovered the keys to the cabinet on open display, hanging up at his front door.

Defence solicitor Josey Donachie told Sheriff David Sutherland that her client had been moving house at the time.

"His firearms were the last thing to be moved and he put the cabinet keys on to his car key ring. He then hung them up at the front door.

"He should have put them elsewhere. However he does not intend renewing his firearms certificate as it is too much responsibility."

Helliwell was fined £270.
