THERE is expected to be an increase in the number of RAF jets and maritime aircraft in the skies above Badenoch and Strathspey from Monday.

The aircraft will be taking part in Exercise Joint Warrior, the biggest military exercise in Europe this year, which will involve the navies, air forces and armies of 14 countries testing their combat skills.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "There will be RAF fast jets and maritime aircraft operating over the Badenoch and Strathspey region during the exercise. These will fly periodically between next Monday (October 3) and October 14."

He said that the exercise was organised by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, and had taken on huge strategic, operational and tactical importance as it backs up the training required for Afghanistan and Libya.

The spokesman added: "Flying tasks for this mixed multination air contingent will focus on operational training for aircrews, to include long range attack missions involving air to air refuelling support, close air support in support of troops on the ground, fast jet combat reconnaissance, and maritime attack and support missions."

Some limited night and weekend flying will be carried out from RAF Lossiemouth supporting UK and multinational naval training on the exercise.
