His family has crofted and farmed in Strathspey since the 1600s.

Mr Grant was 74 and this afternoon he made his final journey to Abernethy Old Kirk for a private family funeral service.

Moments after Barry Kirk's photograph was taken a large crowd gathered in the village, again observing the Covid-19 distancing guidelines, to add their own salute to Mr Grant, who had farmed locally and at Dulnain Bridge until his retirement in 2011.

Although he was retired, he still contributed selflessly to the community in a variety of ways, notably at the Rotary Club of Spey Valley, where for years he was a highly popular and much respected member.

He leaves a wife, Freda, children Katherine and Jenny and grandchildren Charlotte and Fergus and was seen in the community as "a good friend to many."

Fellow farmer and friend John Kirk said: "He will be very sadly missed."
