A tree narrowly missed three cars when high winds brought it crashing down on to the road outside the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) headquarters in Grantown on Tuesday.

The trees, whose rings were counted by a member of staff, is thought to be over 200 years old.

Despite the lucky escape for the drivers of the cars, the strath escaped the worst of the first major storm of the autumn in Scotland so far.

The impact of high winds and heavy rain across large parts of the country required significant multi-agency activity.

The Scottish Government’s Resilience Room (SGoRR) and Transport Scotland’s Multi Agency Response Team (MART) were both activated yesterday in light of Met Office Amber Alerts and continude to monitor the situation as the weather front moved north and west.
