One of the regions most prominent Highland councillors has announced he is biding to top the SNP Regional List for Holyrood this May.

Councillor Ken Gowans represents the large semi rural Inverness South Ward on Highland Council.

Mr Gowans said "We are on the cusp of independence and I remain committed to delivering that. Independence is not an end in itself but the beginning of a new Scotland. We need people with experience and commitment to make Scotland the place we all know it can be.

"At the moment, we are currently experiencing challenges like never before with the ravages of Brexit and Covid-19 and to deal with them we need a strong SNP Government that is committed to the people of the Highlands and Islands.

"As an experienced Highland councillor, I understand the needs of constituents and the very real benefits of working in partnership with MPs, MSPs and Scottish Government Ministers as well as engaging in cross-party dialogue to deliver our desired outcomes.

"I will focus on the areas we all know that are important for our area, such as education, the economy and infrastructure, and I already serve on these strategic committees within Highland Council.

"I understand the challenges that local authorities have in delivering services but recognise that the Scottish Government can deliver on local and regional levels, with support that is tailored to the needs of every area.

"As a long-standing party member of over four decades and an experienced Highland Councillor, I have the skills, experience and attributes necessary to represent you and those in your community.

"SNP elected members are not afraid of hard work, long hours and dedication to the task which is one of the reasons that we have earned the trust and respect of our communities and I will continue to do that."
