Amid record wildfires, heatwaves and warnings, some visitors are still lighting campfires among Badenoch and Strathspey’s woods.

In fact on Tuesday one was lit up right beside the ‘old A9’ beside Loch Alvie, much to the anger of one passing local.

Former Cairngorm Mountain Resort staff member Neil Turnbull was furious when he noticed the impromptu camp. He drew up on the spot and made for the culprits.

“Just had to put out a fire and clean up after a couple of lads parked up at Loch Alvie,” he posted.

“They scarpered when I stopped.

“I do wish there was more common sense and decency in this world!”

Comments followed in agreement - some of them as fiery as the centre of the impromptu camp, where the young men made off so quickly they left a pair of shoes on the lochside, along with their litter including bottles and tissues.

Emergency services continue to warn of the dangers of lighting up with the ground so tinder-dry after the most rainless spring in 23 years.
