An electricity substation near Laggan has been approved by councillors in Inverness today (Tuesday).

The facility at Garvamore will link the Stronelairg wind farm into the Beauly-Denny transmission network.

It was recommended for approval by council planning officers.

Members of Highland Council’s South Planning Applications Committee took a site visit before making a decision.

Bill Lobban, Scottish National Party councillor for Strathspey and Badenoch, raised concerns about how the site would be screened by greenery in the longer-term. He clarified that the screening put in would not be permanent.

Planning officer Ken McCorquodale said conditions attached to planning permissions to try to maintain screening at all times would alleviate concerns.

But Highland Council leader Margaret Davidson believed the positioning of the substation was "reasonable".

She said the place was :"overrun with deer" and she wanted further discussion with the local members about exactly what the landscaping would be around the site.
