Restaurants, pubs and cafes through-out Badenoch and Strathspey will be offering half-price meals to diners from today as part of a new Government initiative to support the hospitality sector after the Covid-19 lockdown.

Eat out to Help out scheme starts today in the strath and across the UK.

Members of the public will be able to enjoy 50 per cent off eat-in meals ordered at participating outlets under the Eat Out to Help Out scheme which will run during August.

The offer, which is only available between Mondays and Wednesdays, will be capped at £10 per diner and does not apply to alcohol.

There has been a high uptake of the scheme by establishments in the strath.

Vouchers are not required for those booking tables, with the participating eateries deducting 50 per cent from the bill and charging the discount to the Treasury.

Some of the major chains taking part in the scheme include Burger King, Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, Five Guys, KFC, McDonald's, Nando's, Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and Wetherspoon.

More than 72,000 eateries have signed up to the scheme, according to Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Of these some 3,766 outlets have so far signed up for the scheme in Scotland – this number only relates to businesses that have less than 26 outlets.

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: “Eat Out to Help Out is a fantastic scheme which will help Scotland’s hospitality businesses get back on their feet.

"I am very pleased that 3,766 Scottish restaurants, bars and cafes have signed up. This is a great opportunity for people in Scotland to get together with friends and family in a safe environment and get up to 50 per cent off their bill.

“The UK Government is doing all it can to drive our economic recovery, and we want to see all sectors of our economy open again where it is safe to do so.”

The scheme, part of the Chancellor’s Plan for Jobs, aims to protect jobs in the hospitality sector – which has been hit hard by coronavirus.

It could save a family of four up to £40 per meal.
