THE dual carriageway on the new A9 stretch between Dalraddy and Aviemore has been re-opened to motorists after roadworks.

The timing of the works at the start of the summer was criticised by community and business leaders.

There were also claims that Transport Scotland had put off installing the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) cabling last year to allow them to open the dual – part of the £3 billion flagship project – as pledged by the end of last summer.

Several laybys still remain closed along the five mile stretch.

The road was reduced to single lanes in each direction with 50mph speed limits in place for most of the duration of the six weeks of the work.

Tourism leaders questioned why work could not have been done outwith the peak holiday season.
