A dog was killed in a fire following a collision involving two vehicles on the A9 near Newtonmore yesterday.

The drivers of a Volkswagen Crafter Van anad a caravanette escaped without serious injury from the accident which resulted in both vehicles leaving the road and the caravenette catching fire.

The driver and sole occupant of the left-hand-drive caravanette, Bob Macleod, was heading south after dropping off his partner at Inverness airport. He said that as the vehicle became engulfed in flames he tried to rescue his 8-year-old springer spaniel Jack who was trapped in the wreckage, but the flames were too severe and he was unable to save the dog.

The incident occurred at around 2pm and diversions lead to tailbacks of up to 5 miles through the villages of Newtonmore and Kingussie.
