Demolition work is continuing at Scotland's first ski hotel
After years of rot and decay, the eyesore which the once hugely popular Struan Hotel became is now steadily disappearing in Carrbridge.
Work started last week on the back of the derelict building and passsers-by were allowed a glimpse of a stairwell which nobody had trod for nearly two decades.
That is perhaps except for a few youngsters who had no business there but the desire to defeat all the barricades which had gone up around the place once it was declared a health hazard.
The demolition, being carried out by Alness-based Munros, has seen a tricky start with the removal of asbestos panels once so popular with builders.
The work was finally approved after Highland Council opted for a Compulsory Purchase Order and acquired the site which had been allowed to fall into disrepair by the owners in a 16-year wrangle.
Cairngorms National Park Authority’s planning committee members unanimously approved plans for 10 flats in three blocks in the Spring.
There have been calls for the site’s importance to the development of skiing in the Cairngorms to be recognised with a plaque and through the street name.
The hotel was originally opened by Karl Fuchs, a member of the 1948 Austrian Olympic team, and his wife, Eileen, in the mid 1950s.
