GRANTOWN SQUARE DANCE: Revellers welcome in 2020.

Grantown's big Hogmanay celebrations have not been called off and a final decision on its go-ahead will be taken in the Autumn, organisers have announced.

It comes after speculation that the end of year gathering was the latest in a long line of events in the strath to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

An estimated 2000 revellers thronged The Square in Grantown to welcome in 2020 in style.

Tom Clarke, spokesman for the Hogmanay committee and Grantown Initiative, told the Strathy: "There seems to be some confusion regarding the town's Hogmanay in The Square celebrations this year.

"As things stand, no decision has been made regarding any cancellation as it’s still some way off and Covid-19 rules may change.

"Clearly we will follow the Scottish Government guidelines in force and will take advice from other bodies such as Highland Council.

"We anticipate making a decision in a couple of months – most likely around late October – based on the information available to us at that time."

The quality of the fireworks display greeting 2020 was singled out by many of those attending one of the Highlands’ biggest Hogmanay parties.

Shetland-based Maggie Anderson and Friends provided the musical accompaniment for the dancing in The Square.

The Hogamany celebrations are funded by donations and community events. Forty helpers assisted last time out into the small hours with roles varying from manning the food and drink stall to carrying out electrical safety checks.
