Work to restore power at Kingussie High School is said to be continuing around the clock, but it remains unclear if the school will re-open on Monday as planned.

The school was closed early Wednesday afternoon after a loss of electricity, heating and phone service, due to fuse boxes overheating at the construction site of a new classroom block.

A spokesman for the Highland Council said: "The contractors are under no illusion that we want the school open on Monday but there’s only so much they can do. A lot of wiring was burned out.

"They have been working around the clock and if they need more time then they will work all day Saturday and all day Sunday, but there will come a time when we’ll have to say, is it opening or not?

"If it is then we’ll get the message out to parents through local radio, and we’ll liaise with the bus companies.

"Under health and safety rules we can only re-open the school with proper heating and lighting."

Parents can also phone the Highland Council’s schools closure line on 0870 054 6999. The PIN required for information about Kingussie High School is 04 1120.

Earlier today (Friday), site foreman Hugh Montague said: "There will be a report going in to the Highland Council today that will clarify when the school is re-opening. Our side will be ready."
