Deadline extended to apply for Highland community watchdogs
Highland Council is advising people that time is running out to become a community councillor in Badenoch and Strathspey.
The deadline for nominations has been extended until noon on October 29 to encourage more people to come forward.
Councillor Alasdair Christie, Depute Leader of the Highland Council, said: "Community councils play a significant part in local democracy and in strengthening communities across a wide range of issues.
"They bridge the gap between communities and public agencies including The Highland Council.
"They act as a voice for the local community on lots of issues from new buildings and roads to local services and facilities.
He continued: “Community councils are the strongest means of becoming involved with your local area.
"Getting involved will give you a good understanding of the workings of local government and what is going on locally and nationally.
"It’s important that a range of people are part of community councils so that different opinions and ideas are heard.”
“It would be an awful shame if we cannot form new community councils just through to lack of numbers.”
Anyone aged 16 and over can take part, both as candidates and as voters.
A short video has been made by young people in Highland to promote this opportunity - https://vimeo.com/362738885
Full details and nomination papers are available on the council's website and from the council ward manager Liz Cowie at The Courthouse in Kingussie.
