CRY campaign’s first success - a screening unit visit at the end of May
The first Cardiac Screening in memory of Calum Mackintosh is set to be held in Carrbridge Village Hall in May.
Ann Mackintosh, who is spearheading the campaign to give young people a better chance against undetected heart problems, has confirmed that the first unit will visit on May 31 and June 1.
She told the Strathy: “It is open to 14-35 year olds and has been funded through Calum’s memorial fund.
“If anyone would like to book a slot to be screened or get more information then they can message me on Facebook for the priority booking code.”
Mrs Mackintosh explained that in November 2023, youngest son Calum died of young sudden cardiac death aged 19.
“Calum was super fit and healthy, and should have run the Edinburgh marathon with his best friend Eoin Baikie last year.
“This year, Eoin has challenged me to race him in the marathon, and so we have two relay teams racing him instead - "Chasing Baikie for Cal" - Zander, George, Ruaridh and I, and "Chasing Baikie for CRY" - Iain, Jack, Josh and Hayden (Timmy).
“Our aim is to raise £7000 to fund a local cardiac screening day in 2026.”
The campaign’s funding page urges: “Please help the 9 of us reach our target so that young people can get screened in our local area.
“Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
“With your donation, CRY can reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young.
“By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions.”
