Council workers to get extra day off thanks to The Queen
Staff working for Highland Council will enjoy a day off next year to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s reign.
The monarch’s Diamond Jubilee is to marked by the extra holiday on either June 4 or 5.
Members of the local authority’s resources committee have agreed the recommendation from assistant chief executive Michelle Morris who said marking the national occasion could boost staff morale.
It is likely the extra day’s holiday will be Monday June 4.
However, the exact date will not be confirmed until officials find out more details about the programme of national celebrations.
The day’s holiday will cost the local authority £90,000 in relief staff for social services and the transport and roads department.
Councillors decided not to give staff a day off in April for the royal wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton because it would have cost £200,000.
However, the costs are considerably lower for granting the jubilee day off because it is not classed as a public holiday so staff do not have any entitlement to extra pay for the additional annual leave.
National celebrations to mark the occasion will take place over several days starting from June 2.
Buckingham Palace is organising a series of events including a concert and pageant on the River Thames.
