Still hope for staff accommodation project in former Grantown care home

The firm marketing the former Grandview House nursing home on Grantown's High Street, which went up for sale last month, is highlighting a range of possiblities for the property.

Dating from the late 1800’s, and known previously as the Palace Hotel, Grandview House has operated as a care home since 1989 until its closure earlier this year.

With extensive frontage to the High Street and occupying a central location close to The Square, Grandview features 45 bedrooms, mainly single occupancy with en-suite facilities.

Neil Calder, partner in the Inverness office of Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, said: “While the property has most recently operated as a care home, other potential uses including conversion to residential flats, hotel, hostel or tourist accommodation may be possible, subject to securing the appropriate planning permission from The Highland Council.”

Offers over £450,000 are being invited.

Since the doors closed hopes have risen that a developer might transform the building into desperately-needed staff accommodation for local businesses.

David Richardson, the Federation of Small Business’ development manager for the Highlands and Islands, told the Strathy: “The staffing shortage affecting so many great businesses in the strath is for some a real crisis.

"While the Cairngorms National Park is undoubtedly a world-class holiday destination physically and culturally, businesses cannot give the world-class customer service that they and their customers want if they don’t have enough people on the ground.

"The shortage of jobseekers makes it a sellers’ market, and solving this problem requires things like attractive wages, good public transport, vibrant communities with appropriate facilities for workers and their families to enjoy in their free time, and, of course, nice, affordable places to stay.”

The stone and slate landmark extends to over 31,000sq ft over part basement and four upper floors at a rateable value of NAV/RV £92,000.
