It appears that plans for a first McDonald's in the strath could be taking shape.

The owners of Aviemore Retail Park have submitted plans for a variation of use for unit six – the former Superdrug store which closed last September.

They want it to be allowed to be used for a restaurant or cafe along with ancillary hot food takeaway use.

The fast food giant confirmed earlier in the year that it is looking to open in Aviemore, and sources claimed the 278 square metres vacant unit was the most likely destination.

Neither retail park owners Reality Income Limited nor McDonald's responded to the Strathy before yesterday's deadline.

But the plans submitted to Highland Council's planning service detail the need for the variation in use as no restaurant or cafe use or hot food takeaway is currently permitted within unit six.

Planning agents Montagu Evans also state: "It should be noted that the applicant also intends to undertake associated works.

"Details of these proposed works will be submitted for consideration as part of a separate planning application to follow in due course."

The nearest McDonald's to the strath are in Inverness.
