Competitors ready to stir it out for Golden Spurtle at the World Porridge Making Championships in Carrbridge

Final preparations for the annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships, to be held in Carrbridge on Saturday, are bubbling away nicely.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the event, several of the past champions will be returning for a special porridge masters event.

Event co-ordinator Margarete Paschke said: "We expect to have eight Golden Spurtle world champions cooking at the event.

"There has never been a better opportunity to taste porridge from the world’s supreme porridge makers."

In the main competition, professional chefs, food experts, enthusiasts and home cooks will be keen to wrestle the coveted Golden Spurtle from the hands reigning champion John Boa, from Strathglass.

Last year’s entries included the owner of a porridge bar in Copenhagen; a grain miller and Sweden’s Nordic porridge making champion; an astrophysics student with the formula for cooking porridge; and a Texan mother and cook.

There will also be a speciality competition, where contestants are at liberty to add other ingredients to their porridge to produce an array of sweet and savoury dishes.

Reigning speciality champion Nick Barnard, who is joint founder of Rude Health company as well as being an accomplished stunt pilot, will by flying up to this year’s championships to build on the success of his fruity date porridge.

BBC World Service announcer Fiona MacDonald will be master of ceremonies for the day, while Commonwealth Games mountain bike competitor Kenta Gallagher will preside as guest judge.
