Charlie Kennedy will not duck heavyweight battle
Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has admitted a political battle with Iocal MP Danny Alexander in 2015’s General Election is looming - if a controversial boundary shake-up is approved.
Cutting the number of Highland Westminster constituencies from three to two is proposed by the Boundary Commission for Scotland which held a hearing in Inverness on Thursday.
Mr Kennedy, the current Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP, called for three Highland seats to be retained.
"More voters are going to find themselves more distanced from their Westminster representatives," said Mr Kennedy, who accepted three into two could not go and Mr Alexander could become a rival candidate.
"If it happened then the Lib-Dem party members would have to decide but we are a long way from that yet," said Mr Kennedy.
The final boundary recommendations are to be made in 2013.
Scottish Lib-Dem president Malcolm Bruce has called for Nairn, Ardersier, Petty and Croy to be included in a new Moray constituency instead of the proposed new seat of Inverness and Skye.
He argued traditionally Nairn had been included in Moray.
