A new campaign encouraging people to take on a rescue pet has been launched by the Scottish SPCA as part of its Rehoming Week.

The charity's Highlands and Islands Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre is appealing for new homes for the many animals in its care, with the slogan 'rescue pets make great pets'.

Rehoming Week, which runs from 18-24 March, comes as Gregory the rabbit reaches ten months in the Scottish SPCA's care with no interest.

Centre manager Elaine Floyd said, "We have lots of animals just like Gregory who are ready and waiting for a loving family to take them home.

"This year we've launched our 'rescue pets make great pets' campaign because we know first-hand how rewarding it can be to give an animal a second chance in life.

"Many have had very tough pasts and some have never experienced life as part of a loving family, which incredibly sad.

"Rehoming Week is our chance to raise awareness of the fact we find new homes for animals as well as rescue them.

"People may also be surprised to learn that we don't just seek homes for cats, dogs and rabbits. We regularly rehome birds, snakes, terrapins and fish, plus many more pets."

Elaine added, "Because we don't put any healthy animals to sleep, we are always full of wonderful pets looking for a fresh start.

"Although we found loving homes for 463 animals last year, Rehoming Week gives us an opportunity to remind people that rescue pets have so much to offer.

"Of course, taking on any animal is a huge responsibility and potential owners must have the time, commitment and resources available to provide for the needs of a pet.

"We would never encourage impulsive rehoming, however, anyone thinking of getting a pet is very welcome to come along to our centre to meet our fantastic animals for themselves."
