Fans of Badenoch bestseller invited to help fund a talking book
A Badenoch author’s acclaimed debut novel is set to speak for itself, 10 years on.
To celebrate her landmark anniversary, Kincraig author Merryn Glover will produce an audiobook - with the backing of her fans.
Described by Northwords Now as “an epic and raging sweep of history”, A House Called Askival spans 70 years in India from Independence to contemporary times.
Exploring religious conflict on personal and political levels through three generations of one family, it is ultimately a story of reconciliation and grace.
The book received rapturous reviews from critics and readers alike and is now set to appear as an audiobook.
Glover attended school in a hill station in North India, which is the setting that inspired this first novel. To find the perfect narrator, she has taken the story back home by commissioning Indian actress, Shena Gamat, to do the recording in Delhi.
The pair were school friends in India, even performing in a play together, and are revelling in their creative collaboration.
Glover explained: “This is a book of my heart. Set where I grew up in the beautiful Himalayas, it was a labour of love and heartbreak, taking nine years.
“Its themes of inter-generational trauma and making peace across differences has moved many people deeply, and I am so excited that the very talented Shena will bring it voice.”
“What an absolute delight to narrate A House Called Askival,” said the actress.
“It's a pleasure to experience Merryn's deft writing, so much of it just tripping off the tongue ever so joyfully. I feel honoured to bring the characters, the setting, the story, the delving into issues larger than us all to life.”
To cover production costs, they are running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Backers there will be the first to receive the new audiobook, and can also get A House Called Askival in ebook and print formats, as well as other rewards.
It finishes on August 15th, Indian Independence Day.
“In light of what is happening on the world stage today, A House Called Askival is a book that demands our engagement.” Wasafiri Magazine
