CairnGorm needs to be "less weather dependent"

With no usable snow and no lifts or runs open on CairnGorm Mountain as the Strathy went to press, talk was of the hill becoming “less dependent on the weather.”

On Tuesday (December 29) Natural Retreats general manager Janette Jansson confessed: “With Christmas now behind us and December drawing to a close we are of course a little disappointed that we haven’t yet been able to open any uplift, as we are aware that there are lots of people out there eagerly anticipating their first slide of the season at CairnGorm.

“That said, after tomorrow’s storm the MET Office is forecasting more snow with a return to lower temperatures so we are hopeful that the mountains will be white again towards the end of the

week.

“The operations team has also been moving around the snow cannons on-site so that we can recommence snow-making whenever the lower temperatures strike to top up the naturally falling snow.”

The general manager confirmed: “We have always been aware that snowsports are very dependent on the weather and that the local community often depends on CairnGorm Mountain to bring people to the area throughout these months. This is why we are currently working on new ways in which we can become less dependent on the weather by improving on-site facilities and increasing our product offering all year round.”
