Cairngorm Mountain wants to add more tube slides aimed at family market

Cairngorm Mountain has applied for the expansion of a family-based attraction which it introduced last summer at the resort.

The operators Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd want to instal two more tube slides and to extend and realign the existing one at its car park at Coire Cas.

The plans were lodged with Highland Council but have since been called in by the Cairngorms National Park Authority’s planning service for determination.

Brian Muir, of agents Ryden Planning, has told planners: “(Owners) Highlands and Islands Enterprise has commenced work on a masterplan which will provide a planning, environment and economic context for the future of the resort as a whole.

“In the meantime, CMSL is addressing those matters which require immediate attention in order to maintain the ongoing viability and vitality of the resort.... this application is one of these.”

The 70-metre, high-speed slide opened last August to help broaden the appeal of the resort in the summer to families. Users slide down on sit-down snow-tubes from the upper car park to the lower parking facility.

The existing permission for the single slide runs until November 2021. Mr Muir states: “This period is sought for the extension to the existing tube slide and for the installation of the two new slides.”

The preliminary length of the slides is 30 metres and 52 metres.

A CMSL spokeswoman said: “We want to expand the adventure play park for the family market and planning permission is required.”

The plans lodged by CMSL also show a short zip-line in the play area.
