The snowstorms currently blasting most of Britain have brought a huge boost to Scotland’s mountain ski areas, with all reporting unprecedented conditions for the time of year.

Heather Negus, Chair of Ski-Scotland, said: "Not only have the storms brought huge dumps of snow but it’s amazing quality for the time of year.

"As far as we’re concerned, there’s no such thing as ‘the wrong sort of snow’ – we welcome it all! "However, at this time of year, we’d expect spring snow, which is usually quite wet, but what all the ski areas are reporting is lovely soft fluffy snow and loads of fresh powder."

Despite the high winds, Glencoe Mountain Resort opened yesterday, with Glenshee and The Lecht joining them today and CairnGorm Mountain and Nevis Range are planning to open tomorrow.

At the local resort staff are working hard to dig out lifts and clear roads to make sure all pistes are open and accessible for everyone to enjoy the amazing snow later this week, in good time for Easter weekend and the school holidays.

There are also some special Easter events including a charity "onesie" event at CairnGorm Mountain on Easter Saturday.

Later in the holidays, on April 6, CairnGorm Mountain will also host the Vans New Big Air Competition. Heather said: "Most mountain ski areas are not really busy at this time of year, and over the past few weeks there have been few queues, with some ski areas reporting that customers have been skiing straight onto the lifts."

As weather forecasts can change as quickly as the weather itself, Ski-Scotland recommends that everyone checks the latest snow, road and weather at www.ski-scotland.com/conditions before setting out.

Up to and including Sunday (March 24), the five mountain snowsports areas had recorded just under 179,000 ‘skier days’.
