Cairngorm Mountain moved back into the black for the past year, their latest accounts have revealed, as progress continues to appoint a new operator for the attraction.

The company made a profit of £382,819 for the 12-month period to March 31 this year, boosted by what they described as an "exceptional" ski season.

CairnGorm Mountain Ltd had reported a loss of £440,509 for the previous financial year when trading was hit by a lack of snow on the slopes after an encouraging start to the 2011/12 winter season.

Mr Ian Whitaker, chief executive of CairnGorm Mountain, told the ‘Strathy’: "We have enjoyed a busy summer following an extremely good winter season.

"The recently introduced guided mountain bike descents of the hill are becoming increasingly popular as more visitors realise that this exciting activity is available on the mountain.

"Fine weather has also resulted in more funicular passengers taking advantage of the opportunity to walk at CairnGorm on guided walks from the top station to the summit and also back downhill.

"Looking to the coming winter snowsports season, the year-round resort has been undertaking extensive maintenance work, with new snow fencing in many areas.

"Arrangements are being put in place to undertake further snowmaking trials, with a new larger TechnoAlpin TF10 snow cannon, in addition to the present four."
