A Highlands and Islands Enterprise spokesman told the Strathy: “Balfour Beatty are now just days away from finishing on site.

“All grouting has been completed and they’re in the final stages of cutting and tensioning a small number of rods that are part of the scarf joint assemblies.

“Once that’s been completed, there are still a number of follow-up actions that need to be carried out including mechanical safety checks, testing and associated documentation.

“We’ll know in a day or two whether return to service will be achievable by the end of December or will have to wait until January but it’s very close.”
