It’s been an awesome 30-year-trip which has taken him to William Shatner’s garden and the resting grounds of war heroes but for Aviemore stoneworker Marc Bruce it’s time to lay down the hammer.

As he put the finishing touches to Kingussie’s magnificent monument to Force K6 this past week, Mr Bruce told the Strathy he had completed his last contract for Cairngorm Stonework.

“I’ve had to call it a day,” said the 48-year-old craftsman. “The arthritis in my neck finally persuaded me to switched careers.”

He has acquired AVM Holiday Let Cleaning Ltd and will have plenty to keep him occupied.

He was just 18 when he set out to be a stoneworker and in his time has seen a huge range of projects, including a fascinating six year life on Nantucket in Massachusetts, where in his 20s he did showpiece landscape work for billionaires including business magnate Warren Buffett and even Captain James T Kirk!

“It was an absolute honour to have been involved in the Indian Contingent Force K6 Memorial Project which has now been completed with uplighters and hardstanding,” said Mr Bruce, whose other notable designs include at the war memorial in Aviemore.

“It’s nice to leave your mark in the world and I’m so grateful to have been given the opportunity.”
