BREAKING NEWS: Sterritt and Peters miss out on Olympic medal
Kingussie sailor Fynn Sterritt and teammate James Peters have missed out on an Olympic medal at the Paris Games.
The pair ended up finishing seventh overall in the men’s 49ers which has just finished off Marseille in baking hot weather.
European champions Steritt and Peters were left to rue two poor results out of 12 races in qualifying leaving one of their 18th places to count against them.
The GB crew finished seventh in the crunch Medal Race which has just been completed after twice having to be abandoned yesterday due to the lack of wind.
Sterritt told the Strathy: “You just want to go out there and make people proud.
“I know we have and that support is huge. To see the pictures from James’s sailing club at Hayling Island and from my sailing club back at Loch Morlich - that's been amazing.
“Obviously they watched the medal race too and I saw all the photos and videos from that.
“It was so nice to see everybody together and watching us and trying to cheer us on from afar.
“Their support is absolutely everything. I hope they managed to tune in today as well."
The Spanish duo of Diego Botin le Chever and Florian Trittel Paul claimed a thoroughly deserved gold in the men’s skiffs from New Zealand and the United States.
The two Spaniards did not win a single event in the fleet race but claimed the Medal Race victory.
Ireland, who were in a podium position going into the race, jumped the start and had to restart the race.
The costly mistake left Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove to play catch-up for the rest of the race with double points at stake.
Sterritt and Peters went into the Medal Race of 10 boats with an outside chance of a medal. But they needed the wind to blow to give them a tilt for a podium position - and the weather did not deliver.
The overall results are as follows:
Winners: Diego Botin le Chever & Florian Trittel Paul (Spain) 70pts; r/up: Isaac McHardie & William McKenzie 82pts; 3rd: Ian Barrows & Hans Henken (USA) 88pts; 4th: Robert Dickson & Sean Waddilove (Ireland) 91pts; 5th Dominik Buksak & Szymon Wierzbicki (Poland) 93; 6th Bart Lambriex & Floris van de Werken (Netherlands) 99pts; 7th: James Peters & Fynn Sterritt 99pts.
