The body of missing Strathy reporter Clive Dennier has been found in a river near Loch Hourn.

Mr Dennier, who was based at the newspaper’s Kingussie office, disappeared after going hillwalking over the weekend of March 23-24.

It is understood that his body was spotted in the river yesterday afternoon by a local farmer.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We can confirm that following information received from a member of the public, the body of a male was recovered from the area of Kinloch Hourn during the evening of Friday.

"The family of Mr Dennier have been informed of this development. Arrangements are being made for a formal identification."

The alarm was sounded by worried work colleagues when he failed to turn up on Monday March 25 at the Grantown office where he was covering holiday leave for editor Gavin Musgrove.

Mr Musgrove said: "Our thoughts are with Clive’s family and his many good friends at this difficult time. He was just the most fantastic and lovable person. We have not only lost a very talented and experienced reporter but also our best friend.

"His disappearance left a massive hole in our lives and not a single day goes by without us thinking about him but at least the recovery of his body will bring some closure and there will be a chance to say farewell to him."

There had been extensive searches for Clive both on the Knoydart peninsular by mountain rescuers and friends, and in Loch Hourn and Loch Nevis by the Police Scotland Dive Team and a British Red Cross team using sonar equipment. The charity Sky Watch also carried out extensive aerial searches.

The silver VW Polo belonging to the popular 50-year-old journalist had been discovered parked close to Loch Hourn on March 29 after a nationwide media appeal for information on his whereabouts.
