Blow your horn in memory of Aviemore's Bobbie
People in Aviemore are being asked to remember a well-loved former ski instructor in a novel way at noon today.
They are being asked to toot their car horns in memory of Bobbie Birnie, of Dellmhor, who passed away last Friday (March 20) after a long, courageous and dignified battle against prostate cancer.
His funeral will be for family only because of the current restrictions due to the Covid-19 crisis.
But friends want Mr Birnie's memory still to be honoured and have come up with the unusual tribute which they hope the family who live on the outskirts of the village will be able to hear.
Mr Birnie has been described by friends as one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet as well as a top notch skier.
Ian Malcolm said: "Bobbie passed away last week and we hoped that we would be able to mark his life at his funeral.
"However, that is not to be due to the restrictions imposed on people under Covid-19.
"It will only be for close family - his wife Yvonne and the girls and their family.
"I'm sure you all wish them well at this time.
"Something will be arranged once these restrictions have been lifted that will allow us all to come together to celebrate Bobbie's life.
"Since we are unable to attend or even visit Yvonne might I suggest we show some unity.
"Today at midday can those of us in and around Aviemore go outside and blow our car horns for 10 to 20 seconds. I'm sure there are enough of us to make it heard even in Dellmhor.
"With your help and friends, we might make a difference letting Yvonne know how we feel about Bobbie."
Mr Malcolm added: "Bobbie was probably the bonniest skier you'll ever have seen."
A celebration of Mr Birnie's life will be held at a later date, the family has said.
A tribute will be appearing to Mr Birnie in the Strathy.
