Newtonmore's Square installation shaping up
The team behind an ambitious art installation project in Newtonmore have applied for planning permission.
After a comprehensive public consultation and selection, a stone-based artwork was chosen for the village square on a site of some 40 square metres to the east of the post office on Main Street.
The submission was lodged by Newtonmore Art Project Team with Highland Council’s planning service.
The team behind the project – Newtonmore Business Association, the village’s community council and Newtonmore Community Woodland Development Trust – commissioned Ballindalloch-based Stuart Murdoch (pictured below) to celebrate the village’s local heritage, history, culture, sporting prowess.
It will also act as a new terminus for cyclists and walkers completing the popular long-distance footpath, the Speyside Way.
The supporting information states: “These elements we celebrate are what binds the community together with recreational pursuits and tourism. There is a community belief that the installation will be a focus to the centre of the village which demonstrates the many elements that form our welcoming neighbourhood.
“For the active, Newtonmore are thrilled that the artwork is the terminus for the Speyside Way and will be a relaxing resting point for cyclists.”
