Kingussie comes together to fight the virus

Organisations in the Badenoch capital have united to provide a vital volunteer service to local folk who can not get out to fend for themselves through the crisis.

OneKingussie, comprising teams from Cycle Friendly Kingussie, Kingussie Camanachd Club and the social enterprise Caberfeidh Horizons, tells the Strathy that within its first few days more than 45 households had signed up for help from the new force.

Those at risk can make contact by phoning (01540) 372101 which routes individual calls to a bank of volunteers who will take the call and enter the details into an online form.

The number was organised with the invaluable assistance of Voluntary Action Badenoch and Strathspey (VABS).

"We now have over 140 people signed up to help either taking calls or doing deliveries," said a spokesperson for the new group.

"We have produced a helpful wee video to explain how it works for the people we are helping and for our volunteers."

"We are helping around 45 households already with shopping from the Co-op and prescriptions."

The volunteers are also working with the community group in Kincraig and helping people from Kincraig to Kingussie and all points in between.

"We really want to get the message across that it is not too much trouble we are ready to help anybody who feels they need help.

“OneKingussie is exactly that, one community coming together to look after each other during this crisis.

"We have been blown away by the number of people offering to support people who are isolating themselves. The team at our Co-Op have been outstanding and we have worked really hard to do as much as we can to ensure we are not adding to the problem by spreading the virus.”

“We really want to get the message out to our community that we are here to help, we want to help. So if you feel you should be isolating yourself then just fill in our online form or give us a call.”
