Badenoch Climate Action throws open debate on recycling at Aviemore
As a new approach to recycling is introduced in Badenoch and Strathspey, locals have a chance to find out what’s happening and why.
At a timely public meeting this week, people can put questions to Highland Council who are responsible for waste management policy, and the company that does the recycling on their behalf, David Ritchie and Sons, based at Granish.
The meeting is in the Cairngorm Hotel, Aviemore on Thursday at 7.30pm.
Alan McKinnie, strategic lead (waste strategy and operations) will speak on behalf of Highland Council, and Brian Ritchie will represent David Ritchie and Sons.
ILM Highland will also be there with information about how to dispose of electrical items.
The event is a joint initiative by Sustainable Strathspey and Badenoch Climate Action, whose spokesperson told the Strathy: “There are about to be big changes to our bin collections – how we sort our rubbish and how often it’s collected.
“We often hear cynical rumours that recycled waste all ends up in the same place, and we know for a fact that some rubbish from the UK has been found on beaches in other parts of the world.
“The meeting next week is a chance to find out what really happens to what we put in our blue bins – and in future, perhaps also in our green bins – once it’s picked up.
“Where does it go and what happens to it?”
The group will be posing the question “Why recycle?” and hope to hear that all their efforts at recycling are worth it and all that recycled waste is being put to good use.
“We’ll also be asking if we could be doing more – what about glass collection, what about food composting?
“All are welcome at the meeting. We promise we’ll be talking a load of rubbish – but it will be worth listening to!”
