How many more boars are there out in Badenoch and Strathspey?

THE LONER: Caught yesterday - on camera, at least - the wild boar still on the loose. It is surely one of the original 'guerilla rewilding' herd released in Badenoch last month.
THE LONER: Caught yesterday - on camera, at least - the wild boar still on the loose. It is surely one of the original 'guerilla rewilding' herd released in Badenoch last month.

And still the wild boar hunt goes on in Badenoch.

Another feral pig, this one alone, was spotted yesterday in the Loch Insh area at Kincraig.

It’s simply not known if it’s the last of the herd which was illegally released last month.

Nobody knows exactly how many were involved but the number has been put at 20 overall.

Forestry and Land Scotland have already rounded up two loads of the animals and humanely destroyed them.

The Strathy has asked about the fate of the latest beast but as yet no response from FLS on the fate of the loner - or indeed if others have been reported on the loose.

“We saw this one at Kincraig but we know it had already been spotted in Glenfeshie,” said the villager who took this photo yesterday.

“But then you just don’t know.

“What we also don’t know is why they’re just killing them.

“Is there not a better way, especially since animals must have been licensed at some point. You have to have a licence to keep them and these have all looked like farmed beasts.

“Surely someone could have traced where they came from by now?”

A Forestry and Land Scotland spokesperson said:

“We are aware of several reported sightings of a feral pig in the area over the past couple days.

“We will continue to work with our neighbours to contain the animal.

“However, management of the feral pig will be up to the respective property owner or manager.

“If the pig encroaches onto FLS managed land, we will take the appropriate actions.”
