Badenoch MSP urges voters to turn out
The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has urged voters to turn out in force for today’s (4 May) Highland Council election.
As the polling stations prepared to open, Kate Forbes said that despite the possibility of election fatigue, people failing to exercise their vote is "detrimental to the cause of democracy".
Today’s local council election is the sixth time voters have been at the polling stations in the space of three years.
The local MSP said: "I strongly urge people across the Highlands to vote.
"When it feels like there’s a vote every year - and sometimes a vote every month - it’s easy to switch off but that is very detrimental to the cause of democracy.
"When the majority don’t vote, it’s the minority that swing the result."
The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch added: "Education has got to be a priority for Highland Council and so I hope that voters choose candidates who will make education a top priority – funding basic provisions of education, recruiting enough teachers and ensuring class sizes remain low.
"Highland Council has a statutory duty and responsible to educate our children."
