Badenoch MSP hails ‘remarkable night'
Kate Forbes MSP has hailed the general election result in Scotland as a “remarkable night for the SNP”.
Highland stalwarts Drew Hendry and Ian Blackford were both comfortably returned as MPs for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey and Ross, Skye and Lochaber respectively, significantly increasing their majorities in the process.
Although, SNP councillor Karl Rosie narrowly missed out in the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat, losing by just 204 votes, across Scotland the party gained 13 seats taking its tally to an impressive 48 out of 59 seats.
Ms Forbes said: “I am delighted to see my colleagues Drew Hendry and Ian Blackford returned to Westminster to represent the Highlands.
"This was a remarkable night for the SNP, with the results exceeding my greatest expectations. It demonstrates that the people of the Highlands still trust the SNP to represent them in Westminster.
“The SNP stood on a very clear manifesto of giving Scotland the right to choose.
"We also wanted to see an end to austerity and sadly another five years of a Tory Government is likely to continue the regime of starving public services, including the Scottish Government, of vitally important finances.
“There’s a lot of work to do in the Highlands in terms of investing in services and infrastructure which is challenging in the current climate but I have faith that our Highland representatives will make a strong case.”
