Badenoch MSP calls for 'people way' as part of A9 dual plan
A Badenoch MSP said it is essential for people and wildlife friendly plans to be built into the dualling of the A9.
Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has called for better cycling provision in what he described as 'rapidly developing plans' to dual the remainder of Perth to Inverness road.
The concerns have come to light following discussions surrounding the cycling provision for the new 7.45-kilometre stretch of dual carriageway between Dalraddy and Kincraig.
It is understood from previous Transport Scotland plans the new cycleway will only be one car’s width from the edge of the carriageway, and there will be no barriers or screening to offer protection to path users.
Mr Thompson wants the cycle walkway to be safe for cyclists, horse riders, walkers and mobility scooter users.
The SNP MSP said: “There clearly needs to be a state of the art 'people' way that runs along the route but preferably not immediately adjacent to it.
"Not least because, if it is properly configured, it will mean more people choosing to leave their cars at home for short journeys at least, a very good thing in many ways”
“I am also concerned, like others, about the impact of dualling on the unique wildlife that enriches our lives and draws countless tourists to support our hospitality industry. So I applaud the suggestions made locally about Green bridges for wildlife.”
“I have therefore written to Keith Brown, the Transport Minister urging him to ensure that the planning and construction of this major project includes a 'people' way and the suggested green bridges.”
