'Tar cliffs' on A86 worrying Badenoch drivers
A Badenoch community council is warning of a literal 'side' effect of new surfacing works on a vital trunk road, which has left dangerous tarmac 'cliffs' meantime.
Motorists travelling west from Newtonmore around the bends at the Lochans are being advised to take great care until the project is completed.
In one photo measuring tape clearly shows a depth of tar at the edge of 21cms.
Laggan Community Council chairman Colin Morgan told the Strathy: "Whilst we very much welcome the fact that re-surfacing has taken place and with much inconvenience to local residents, what Transport Scotland engineers on
their inspection today have failed to recognise is that their contractors have left the road in a precarious state and seem not to recognise that on that stretch of road you cannot have two-way traffic when one is a timber lorry, an HGV or a bus without going off or very close to the road edge.
"We recognise that white lining at the road edge is still to happen and should improve matters, and there are signs in place to that effect, and we are sure that most people will take due care to protect themselves, however Transport Scotland do need to tell us when the white lining will be done and when an in-fill will be done to eliminate the 'tar cliff edge' to prevent wheel/tyre damage or more serious accidents.
"This will be especially so when the clocks go back next weekend and morning travel for school takes place in the dark."
Mr Morgan added: "We also acknowledge that it was not part of the expectation that the road at these points would be widened - that's another challenge for another day."
His comments have been endorsed by local road users on social media platforms.
The Strathy will cover responses and any comments from Transport Scotland after the weekend.
